Community that attends the service is from urban, rural and deep rural society. their socio economic backlogs is people from low socio economic status, teenagers, poverty striken, depends on social grants for a living,Orphans and teenager with high birth rate.

-Reduction in perinatal mortality rate
-Cost reduction in buying of incubators by the hospital
-Promotion of bonding for both mother and baby
-Prevention of complications due to incubator care
-Patients days in hospital reduced

(a) Strategies

 a.      What were the strategies used to implement the initiative? In no more than 500 words, provide a summary of the main objectives and strategies of the initiative, how they were established and by whom.
-Patient satisfaction survey done.
-Patient wanted to be with their babies for 24 hrs when their in hospital.
-Less incubators available.
-Benchmaking was done for recliner chairs and were bought.
-Cubcle identified in the unit and used.

-Workshop attended.
-On coming back motivation letter written to mangement.
-Ward was identified.
-KMC forms designed.
-Beds were alocated.
-First baby admitted on the 14th of April 2004 at the birth weight of 1600gram

-No designated KMC Unit in the Hospital; Ordinary cubicle was used.
-No KMC Kichen for mothers-General kichen was used.
-No designated KMC staff-Neonatal care unit staff was utilised.

 d.      What resources were used for the initiative and what were its key benefits? In no more than 500 words, specify what were the financial, technical and human resources’ costs associated with this initiative. Describe how resources were mobilized
Human resourses
-Chairperson of the KMC committee is the manager of the neonatal care unit and KMC.
-Neonatal care unit staff utilised in the unit.

Financial resources
-Adjustable beds bought.
-KMC Unit walls designed by local artist be home like environment.
-KMC wraps sewed at our local hospital laundry.
-Recliner chairs bought.
-Televideo bought for patients to view KMC Video tapes.

Sustainability and Transferability

  Is the initiative sustainable and transferable?
Yes;
-This initiative is sustainable in the institution since it started in April 2004
-Is one of the projects nominated for Centre for Public Sector Innovations in the country.
-Case study prepared for replication in the internet for national and International public services
-Is also nominated to enter for the commonwealth awards public service awards.

Lessons Learned

 What are the impact of your initiative and the lessons learned?
-Area manger supports the project.
-Hospital mangement supports the project.
-Unit manager is part of the KMC committee.
-Team work
-Presence of the paediatrician.
-Dedicated 03 paediatric trained nurses, one neonatal intensive trained nurse and 01 ICU trained nurse.
