Workshop on Promoting Accountability, Transformation, Innovation and Creativity in Africa’s Public-Sector Institutions to support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the achievement of the SDGs


UN DESA held a capacity development workshop on ‘Strengthening Ethics and Accountable Institutions for the Achievement of the SDGs’ with high-level civil servants from all over Africa in collaboration and as part of the Association of Public Administration and Management’s (AAPAM) 39th Round Table, held in Gaborone, Botswana between 6-9 November 2019. The workshop aimed at strengthening participants’ capacities and awareness on key issues in strengthening ethics and integrity in SDG implementation. It included an overview session on linkages between ‘Transparency, Accountability, Integrity and the Achievement of the SDGs’ (plenary with 500 participants), as well as more specialized sessions on ‘Managing Conflicts of Interest’ (500 participants), ‘Codes of Ethics and Codes of Conduct for Strengthening Ethics’ (100 participants) as well as ‘Clean Public Procurement for the SDGs’ (50 participants). Led by Senior Inter-Regional Advisor on Transparency, Accountability, and Integrity Susanne Kuehn, the sessions included the opportunity discuss case studies and Lessons Learned from Uganda on Codes of Conduct (presented by Mrs Adah Muwanga, Director/Human Resource Management Ministry of Public Service) and Zambia on e-procurement (presented by Mr Danies Chisenda, Director General of Zambia’s Public Procurement Authority), as well as opportunities for discussions among participants. Plenary sessions were broadcasted on Botswana television and the session on Conflicts of Interested covered by a local newspaper in Botswana.
