Sensitization Workshop on
"Frontier Technology Policy Experimentation and Regulatory Sandboxes for Sustainable Development"
June 3, 2021

Overview

Frontier technologies have played important roles in increasing productivity, creating innovation and advancing human living quality. These achievements are not only by development of frontier technologies but also by enabling policies, regulatory frameworks and supporting measures.

The need for new approaches of policy experimentation and regulatory sandboxes have emerged as one of innovative tools to create a more conducive and contained space and environments for innovations. Governments support diverse stakeholders including business sector to experiment with new frontier and innovative technologies in new business models or sustainable development approaches.

ESCAP and UNDESA are collaborating to promote enabling environments for policy experimentation and regulatory sandbox approaches on frontier technologies. This collaboration is supported through a 13th Tranche Development Account project titled, ‘Frontier Technology Policy Experimentation and Regulatory Sandboxes in Asia and the Pacific.’ Three Asia-Pacific countries with special needs are selected as project cooperation countries such as Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, and the Maldives.

ESCAP and UNDESA are co-organizing a sensitization workshop for the key stakeholders in the three project countries on 3 June 2021. Participants will be representatives from governments, UN Resident Coordinators, and experts.

The key objectives of the workshop are to:

(a) sensitize project stakeholders on the concept, knowledge and experience (through case studies) on policy experimentation and regulatory sandboxes;

(b) discuss the existing opportunity and gap assessments for proposed project focus areas of recipient countries, emerging from dialogue and interaction among workshop participants; and

(c) identify the next course of action in strategic planning and implementation for advancing the project.
