The Africa i-Parliament Action Plan (Jul 2008-Dec 2012) is coming to an end, hence an External Evaluation was carried out to assess the different activities of the Project. Two evaluation reports (“Bungeni & Akoma Ntoso” and “APKN”) were presented during the “Project Evaluation: Stakeholder Validation Workshop", organized in Nairobi, Kenya, on 20 November 2012.

The World e-Parliament Conference 2012 was held at the Chamber of Deputies of Italy, in Rome, on 13 and 14 September. The Conference was co-organized by the United Nations and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, through the Global Centre for ICT in Parliament, and gathered the community of parliaments – with delegations from more than 130 countries – to reflect on the new opportunities offered by ICTs to improve representation, transparency, accountability, openness and effectiveness of parliaments worldwide.

Akoma Ntoso and the “APKN Legislative Drafting Guidelines” were presented on the occasion of the international conference on “Law Reform and the Law Making Process”, held on 16 and 17 July 2012 in Abuja, Nigeria. The event was attended by Speakers and Members representing several African National Parliaments, as well as members of the ECOWAS Parliament and members of the Nigerian ‘Senators Forum’.

The Africa Parliamentary Knowledge Network (APKN) and the Commonwealth Association of Legislative Counsel (CALC-Africa Region) are convening representatives from African parliaments and government departments at a workshop on “Building Capacity for Legislative Drafting in Africa”, to be held in Cape Town, South Africa, on 4-5 July 2012. The workshop will be hosted by the Parliament of South Africa (current Chair of APKN) and supported by the Africa i-Parliament Action Plan of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN/DESA).

LEGAL HACKS is hosting an International Legislation UnHackathon sponsored by the Hastings Science & Technology Law Journal. Next 19 May, at the Hastings College of Law of the University of California, attorneys and technologists will gather in groups and “mark up” existing laws into an XML format based on Akoma Ntoso.
