The Bungeni Portal was demonstrated at the SADC ICT parliamentary workshop in Cape Town on the 14th and 15th of October 2009.  A demonstration of the system was also made to the South African Parliament's ICT strategy, training and support departments.

Various improvements in the system were highlighted as part of the demonstration :

  • Bungeni now supports a unified pluggable authentication mechanism which allows a unified authentication for all the applications under Bungeni. This also means it is easy to integrate authentication of third-party applications into Bungeni.
  • Bungeni now uses a theming application level proxy. This allows presenting multiple applications to the user as if they were a single unified application. Bungeni uses this to present information from both the Parliamentary Information System and the Content Management System used by Bungeni as a single unified system. This allows separation of the user interface and functionality as the User Interface styling is handled by the application level proxy - essentially this means we can take any third party system and theme it using Bungeni styles and visual cues without actually modifying the third party system.
  • An automated deployment mechanism has been added to Bungeni to ease installation and update of the system. This deployment sytem called Capistrano supports both local and remote deployments and allows an administrator to selectively install or update parts of the system. It also provides a browser based admin UI for updating and installing parts of the system.
  • On the usability front - Bungeni now supports User Workspaces for different parliamentary users. The Workspace provides a dashboard view of all the activities related to a particular user. A calendar interface has been developed for use by clerical staff for scheduling items for sittings.
