Initiative: Marias in Construction
Institution: Salvador City Hall
Overview: : Marias na Construção (Marias in Construction) is dedicated to integrating women who have experienced violence into the workforce, specifically within the traditionally male-dominated field of civil construction. The project's mission is to enhance women’s financial independence by facilitating their entry into the job market through comprehensive training and job placement. The initiative offers free training courses in various trades, preparing women for roles such as industrial electricians, ceramic tile and grout applicators, and construction painters, among others. Partnering with the local branch of the National Industrial Learning Service, the project ensures that women who complete the training are employed by construction companies. Vacancies not taken up by women who have experienced violence are redirected to women in other situations of social vulnerability. Overall, Marias na Construção aims to empower women, promote their economic independence, and contribute to a more inclusive workforce in the construction industry.
Impact: In 2021, 450 women were enrolled in various training programs. According to the National Industrial Apprenticeship Service of Bahia (SENAI), over 600 women received training between 2022 and 2023. Looking ahead, SPMJ has projected the availability of 1,025 new training slots for 2024.
