The district of Gaziosmanpaşa has a population of 501.546, half of which is females. Studies conducted district wide indicate that the employment rate of the female population is one thirds of the male employment rate. In the light of this data, we have aimed to realize the project “Is Someone in the Kitchen?” and bring more women into employment. Our main targets are: • Participation of more women in economic life, • Extending the gender equality to all areas, • Developing activities that encourage women to found their own business and ensuring that they get more share from the development and growth, • Providing occupational and technical skill trainings to increase employment. The project will be a gain for the entire country and ensure sustainable development while the position woman who earns their economic freedom in family will be improved.

The project is being conducted by the Gaziosmanpaşa Municipality in the province of Istanbul. Data from the Turkish Statistical Institute shows that about half the population above age 12 in our district is actively participated in economic life while the other half is not economically active. A major part of the economically inactive population is composed of housewives. Female employment rate is 49,1% in the world and 62,3% in OECD countries while it is 34,5% in Turkey. Participation of women in work life makes them economically stronger, improves their position in the family, and increase their self-confidence and public respectability. Statistics indicate that female education level is going up however their labor force participation rate is still low. All this data has led us to take actions and produce solutions for female employment. To enable especially housewives where the education level is low to have a professional occupation, we started to serve in 2013 at our center which they are familiar of in terms of working environment and where they can be “professional” cooks.
