Parallel Events During the General Assembly High-Level Meeting

Side events, organized by Member States, UN agencies, and non-government stakeholders will run in parallel with the WSIS +10 General Assembly High-Level Meeting between 14 and 16 December, and will offer interactive exchange on key topics cited in the review and future action.

Second Informal Interactive Stakeholder Consultation - Preparatory Process for the General Assembly’s overall review of the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)

As indicated in the Roadmap of the preparatory process, the President of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly will organize the second informal interactive consultation on 19 October 2015 with all relevant stakeholders of the World Summit on the Information Society, to collect their inputs on the zero draft. This precedes the second preparatory meeting by Member States that will take place on 20-22 October 2015. The consultation will provide all relevant WSIS stakeholders an opportunity to contribute their views on the zero draft in a day of interactive panel discussions with representatives from various multi-stakeholders.

2nd Preparatory Meeting - for the General Assembly’s overall review of the implementation of the outcomes of the World summit on the Information Society (WSIS)
20-22 October 2015, ECOSOC Council, United Nations Headquarters, New York

The Second Preparatory Meeting of the WSIS review process will take place from Tuesday to Thursday, 20-22 October in ECOSOC Council at the United Nations Secretariat, New York. The focus of the Second Preparatory Meeting will accordingly be very much on engaging Member and Observer States as well as Observers to reach consensus on critical issues. Statements delivered at the meeting and written submissions will serve as the basis for the second draft version of the WSIS review outcome document that will be further developed, leading up to the High-Level Meeting on 15-16 December 2015. Given that the review concludes in only two months at the High-Level meeting, the Second Preparatory Meeting is structured to maximize interaction among Member and Observer States as well as Observers and focus attention on compromise.

Informal Interactive Stakeholder Consultation - Preparatory Process for the General Assembly’s overall review of the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) 2 July, 2015, ECOSCO Chamber, United Nations Headquarters, New York

The President of the General Assembly will convene an informal interactive WSIS stakeholder consultation with all relevant stakeholders on 2 July 2015. The General Assembly, in its resolution 68/302 on the modalities for the overall review of the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society, decided that the review will be concluded by a two-day high-level meeting of the Assembly, to be preceded by an intergovernmental preparatory process that also takes into account inputs from all relevant stakeholders of the World Summit on the Information Society. The General Assembly also decided that during the preparatory process for the high-level meeting, the President of the Assembly will organize informal interactive consultations with all relevant stakeholders of the World Summit on the Information Society, in order to collect their inputs for the intergovernmental negotiation process.

The first preparatory meeting of the WSIS review process will take place on Wednesday, July 1, from 10 a.m. to 6 pm at the Conference Room 2 in the United Nations Secretariat, New York. Stocktaking Session for the overall review by the General Assembly of the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) 10-11 June, 2015, United Nations Headquarters, New York
Co-facilitators, Ambassador Jānis Mažeiks, Ambassador of Latvia and Ambassador Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates, who are tasked to lead an intergovernmental negotiation process on the overall review of the implementation of the outcomes of the WSIS will organize the first stocktaking session to take place on 10-11 June 2015. This first meeting of the overall process will focus on the negotiation process leading up to the high-level meeting that is planned to be convened at the highest possible level, in December 2015, in accordance with the rules of procedure of the General Assembly”. At this meeting, an overview of the WSIS process to-date will be presented, and delegations will have the opportunity to provide their views on the proposed road map of the overall review. Reports by UN agencies, ITU, UNESCO, UNCTAD, will also presented on the various WSIS+10 reviews that have taken place to date. The hosts of the 2003 and 2005 WSIS summits, Switzerland and Tunisia respectively, will also give an overview of the previous summits.
